Training Programme. European Central Bank. Middle Office Division (MOD)
The Middle Office Division (MOD) of the EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK (ECB)
seeks
applications from graduate students to participate in a training
programme
in 1999. The programme is aimed at highly promising young economists/econometricians and mathematicians enrolled in graduate programmes at top international universities working on quantitative financial issues. Successful candidates will be offered a temporary appointment to conduct research and contribute to current projects
running
at MOD. Candidates must be national of a Member State of the European
Union.
The current call offers availability for one economist/econometrician
and
one mathematician. The scope of the training is twofold. First, it is designed to give
high
quality students the opportunity to gain early experience to the
functioning
of the Risk Measurement and Control environment of the ECB; in this
context,
these students will be encouraged to actively interact with permanent
staff
members both in the MOD and in other areas of operation management at
the
ECB. Second, the training programme is intended to provide the MOD
with
access to the most recent advances at the frontier of the Risk
Management
and Control area, while at the same time giving students the
possibility
to
add to their research the stimulus of a highly challenging
environment.
Students participating in the training programme will normally be
graduate
students who, having successfully completed their course work, are
very
interested in pursuing research in the area of Computational
Finance.
While
at the ECB, these students will be expected to complete a research
paper
or
contribute to the current MOD project development. The project or
topic
of
research will be agreed by the candidate and the Head of MOD. The
work
will
address issues of relevance to the MOD, such as: financial
cointegration,
simulation and risk measurement, performance measurement, volatility analysis, credit risk management, risk management for monetary policy
operations or any other topic that could be of interest for the MOD
team.
Students will be assigned a supervisor in MOD but will be expected to
work
mainly on their own initiative and in a largely autonomous fashion.
They
will have access to the ECB library, computing and statistical
facilities
as
necessary for the successful completion of their work. They should
have a
thorough knowledge of English with fluency in both spoken and written
form
and a satisfactory knowledge of one other European Union language. The students will normally take part in the training for a period
between
6
to 12 months. Applications should reach the ECB MOD as soon as
possible
and
should include:
- A detailed curriculum vitae,
- A complete description of graduate studies (courses and grades)
- A two page research proposal, specifying general research
interests,
methodological, statistical and computing requirements and the
approximate
time necessary for completing the research. The MOD in addition expects the econometric candidate in particular
to
have
a thorough knowledge of econometric and statistical methodology with interest in financial markets. The student should be very familiar
with
data
modelling in econometric packages (i.e. gauss, TSP, Rats or other)
and
have
some working knowledge of computing. The mathematics student
candidate
should have interest in Financial markets and knowledge in one or
more of
these areas: statistics, simulation, computing and/or econometric
modelling.
The ECB can provide students with temporary accommodation for the
duration
of their participation in the Training programme as well as a daily allowance. Unless students provide evidence that they are otherwise
covered
against medical expenses, they will be provided with comprehensive
cover
for
the medical and dental expenses under a mandatory and contributory
medical
and dental benefits plan. Further information about the programme may be obtained by contacting
Fernando Gonzalez at MOD (Tel. +49 69 1344 6430, Email fernando.gonzalez@ecb.int).
Applications should be addressed to the European Central Bank,
Directorate
Personnel, Postfach 16 03 19 D-60066 Frankfurt am Main and should be
sent
by
the 15th of July. Applications should only be submitted on paper via
surface
mail and will not be returned.
