Aim of this workshop:
Aim of this workshop is to discuss the role of financial markets and
institutions for the carbon market, with a special focus on the EU
Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS). Questions addressed are the role banks
play for hedging companies under the EU-ETS, whether a higher degree of
regulation and market oversight is needed for the EU-ETS and what the main
differences to other commodity markets are. Furthermore it will be
discussed what lessons can be learned from financial markets regarding
market oversight and from central banks regarding the management of
monetary policy. The workshop brings together leading experts of carbon
market policy from academia and practice.

Caisse des Dépôts:
The Caisse des Dépôts group, a long term investor, is a public group in
France serving the economic development of the country. Within CDC, CDC
Climat Research is a centre for analysis and research on climate change
economics. It provides information and expertise to the general public,
companies, experts and public decision-makers.
Nicolas Stephan, having a strong background in global commodity and
energy markets, carries out research on carbon funds and innovations in
carbon finance.
Climate Policy Initiative:
CPI was established by George Soros as a nonprofit institution that
examines the effectiveness of energy and climate policies around the
globe. It works closely with the finance and business communities to
understand how emerging climate policies create and affect markets that
allocate investment capital. The initiative maintains offices in key
countries around the world.
Barbara Buchner is director of the CPI office in Venice, Italy.
E.ON Energy Trading:
E.ON Energy Trading is one of Europe’s leading energy trading businesses
and the commercial heart of E.ON, one of the largest investor-owned power
and gas companies in the world. As the link between E.ON and the world’s
wholesale energy markets, the company buys and sells electricity, natural
gas, oil, coal, freight, biomass and emissions certificates.
Stefan Ulreich is one of the leading energy policy experts in E-ON Energy
Trading. Before joining E.ON Energy Trading he worked as a quantitative
analyst in an investment bank.
University of Graz:
Within its current research portfolio the University of Graz combines
excellent know-how regarding carbon markets (Wegener Center) with long
term experience in the fields of finance and investment (Institute of
Banking and Finance). The research is based on a strong theoretical
background and is applied in empirical market analyses.
Stefan Schleicher is senior advicer to the Wegener Center.
Michael Loretz is a PhD canditate at the Institute of Banking and

TITLE: ALTERNATIVE ASSET RETURNS IN THE FINANCIAL CRISIS: RISK EXPOSURES AND RISK MISMEASUREMENT
ABSTRACT:
During the recent financial crisis an index of hedge funds had returns of -20% while the U.S. stock market return was -51%. These large negative returns on hedge funds, which often claim large diversification advantages due to their focus on absolute returns, has been viewed as anomalous by many observers. I argue that (a) hedge funds, on average, have significant market exposure even using standard risk estimation methods, (b) that standard methods of risk estimation underestimate market exposure, and (c) linear risk models further underestimate downside risk for certain funds. With proper methods for risk estimation, the returns on most hedge fund indices were as expected, given the crash in equity prices. This result has important implications for portfolio choice and asset management.
ABOUT ROBERT A. KORAJCZYK:
A member of the Kellogg School faculty since 1982, Robert A. Korajczyk is the Harry G. Guthmann Professor of Finance and Director of the Zell Center for Risk Research. He is a past Senior Associate Dean: Curriculum and Teaching and past Chair of the Finance Department.
Professor Korajczyk received his BA, MBA, and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago. His research interests are in the areas of investments and empirical asset pricing. He is a recipient of the 2009 Crowell Prize for best paper in the field of quantitative asset management, awarded by PanAgora Asset Management, and several other research and teaching awards.
Professor Korajczyk is a past editor and associate editor of several leading finance journals. He has held visiting faculty appointments at the University of Chicago, the University of Vienna, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has served as a consultant to the World Bank and a number of other organizations.
Robert A. Korajczyk is a founding member of the WU Gutmann Center Academic Advisory Board.

Submission and participation are free of charge. Presenting authors are invited to apply to WU Gutmann Center to cover their accommodation and travel expenses.
Im Institute for Finance, Banking and Insurance ist voraussichtlich ab 01. Dezember 2010 bis 30. November 2015 eine Stelle für einen Universitätsassistenten/eine Universitätsassistentin prae doc (Teaching and Research Associate) (Angestellte/r gemäß Kollektivvertrag für die Arbeitnehmer/innen der Universitäten) Beschäftigungsausmaß: 75%, 30 Std./Woche zu besetzen.
Wir weisen darauf hin, dass der WU-Personalentwicklungsplan für Universitätsassistent/in prae doc eine maximale Befristungsdauer von sechs Jahren vorsieht. Bewerber/innen, die bereits als Ersatzkräfte an der WU beschäftigt sind, können daher nur mehr für die auf die sechs Jahre fehlende Zeit eingestellt werden. Die Wiederbestellung von Personen, die bereits eine Stelle als Universitätsassistent/in prae doc inne hatten, ist lediglich auf eine Stelle eines Universitätsassistenten postdoc/einer Universitätsassistentin post doc im Tenure Track möglich.
Aufgabengebiet: Unterstützung und Mitarbeit in der Lehre und Forschung im Bereich Finance, Risk Management or Insurance.
Notwendige Kenntnisse und Qualifikationen: Abschluss eines wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Studiums mit einem Schwerpunkt in Finanzwirtschaft bzw. einer benachbarten Wissenschaftsdisziplin oder Abschluss des Studienzweiges Wirtschaftsmathematik, Statistik oder Physik; Voraussetzungen für die Aufnahme bzw. Absolvierung eines wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Doktoratsstudiums.
Erwünschte Kenntnisse und Qualifikationen: Starkes Interesse am wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten mit Anwendungen in Corporate Finance, Corporate Risk Management, Insurance oder Fair Value Accounting und Kapitalmarktregulierung mit dem Ziel der Promotion; sehr gute Kenntnisse im Bereich quantitativer und analytischer Methoden in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften; sehr gute Englischkenntnisse; Teamfähigkeit und Selbständigkeit.

Particularly, we analyze how plausible rules of thumb for asset allocation perform in comparison to scientific portfolio choice models which are either standard in asset management or have been recently proposed in the academic literature. Our study shows that in fact almost any form of well-balanced allocation over asset classes offers similar diversification gains as these scientific portfolio choice models. We thus suggest a simple and cost-efficient allocation approach for private investors.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Martin Weber, Chair for Banking and Finance at the University of Mannheim, is Director of the University`s Institute of Investment Banking. Born in 1952, he studied mathematics and business administration and received his Ph.D. as well as his habilitation for business administration from the University of Aachen. Before joining the University of Mannheim he held professorships at the Universities of Cologne and Kiel. He spent about three years as visiting scholar at UCLA, at the Wharton School, at Stanford University and at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University. His main interests lie in the area of banking, behavioral finance, and its psychological foundations. Title: ALPHA AND BETA SEPARATION IN A SIMPLIFIED POLICY PORTFOLIO MODEL
Abstract:
A simple structural model of the economy and financial markets can explain the unexpected high frequency of rare, downside events. In a regime framework, a classic policy portfolio needs to be updated to account for additional uncertainty associated with regime shifts. Tactical portfolios are unlikely to succeed in the regime framework unless it is used in combination of unusually high levels of forecasting skill. This model presents a type of investor with knowledge of the uncertainty surrounding the regime framework whose portfolios will dominate traditional policy portfolios under almost all scenarios.
About Rodolfo Martell:
Rodolfo Martell, PhD, Director, is a member of BlackRock's Portfolio Management Group. He is a senior researcher in Scientific Active Equities with focus in Emerging Markets, particularly in Latin America. Dr. Martell's service with the firm dates back to 2007, including his years with Barclay's Global Investors (BGI), which merged with BlackRock in 2009. At BGI, he served as senior portfolio manager and worked on the development and implementation of Global Emerging Markets equity strategies within the International Scientific Equities Group.
Prior to joining BGI, he was an assistant professor of finance at Purdue University. Dr. Martell's research has been published in the American Economic Review and the Review of Finance, and he has also served as ad-hoc referee to the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Business, the Review of Finance, and the Journal of Empirical Finance. He received the Pacesetter Award for Outstanding Achievement from the Fisher College of Business in 2004, and the John and Mary Willis Young Faculty Scholar Award at Purdue in 2006. Dr. Martell earned a BA degree in economics from Universidad de la Americas in 1996, a master's degree in economics from Ohio State University in 2000, and a PhD in finance from Ohio State University in 2005.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
Die FH des bfi Wien hat im September 2009 einen neuen Studiengang im Bereich Asset- und Risikomanagement von Banken und Versicherungen gestartet. Es wurden 22 Studierende aufgenommen und die Ergebnisse und Erwartungen sind bisher sehr vielversprechend. Im September 2010 soll nun der 2. Jahrgang rekrutiert werden.
Einerseits ist dieser Studiengang eine Reaktion auf den dringenden Bedarf der Wirtschaft nach AbsolventInnen in diesem Bereich, andererseits auch eine erste Antwort auf die gegenwaertige Finanzkrise unter dem Stichwort "Financial Education".
Die Entwicklung dieses Programmes erfolgte gemeinsam mit internationalen Partneruniversitaeten in Prag, Istanbul und Katowice und wurde von der EU als Joint Degree Curriculum Development Programm gefoerdert. Im 3. Semester findet daher ein verpflichtender Auslandsaufenthalt (zweimal 3 Wochen geblockt) bei einer der Partneruniversitaeten statt. Daraus ergibt sich auch, dass die Unterrichtssprache durchgaengig Englisch ist.
Das Ziel von ARIMA besteht darin, den Studierenden ein umfassendes Verstaendnis ueber die Zusammenhaenge zwischen Asset- und Risikomanagement im Finanzbereich zu vermitteln.
Die AbsolventInnen erhalten eine fundierte Ausbildung im Risikomanagement (Quantifizierung von Risiken, Risikoaggregation; integrierte Steuerung von Banken und Versicherungen etc.) und Asset Management (Assetklassen, Portfolioselektion, Asset Liability Management, etc.). Hinzu treten methodisch-analytische Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten, vor allem in Finanzmathematik und Statistik.
Voraussetzungen zur Teilnahme am Masterprogramm:
Im Anschluss an ein wirtschafts-, sozial-, natur- oder rechtswissenschaftliches oder technisches Studium einer Universitaet oder Fachhochschule kann der vier Semester umfassende und berufsbegleitend organisierte Masterstudiengang ARIMA absolviert werden.
Weiters muessen besuchte Lehrveranstaltungen im Bereich Mathematik/Statisitk und Wirtschaftswissenschaften nachgewiesen werden.
Aufnahmeverfahren:
Formales Kriterium fuer die Teilnahme am Aufnahmeverfahren ist eine schriftliche Bewerbung bis spaetestens 15. Juni 2010.
Das Aufnahmeverfahren selbst besteht aus einem strukturierten Interview (kurze Praesentation zu einem aktuellen Thema auf Englisch und zusaetzliche Fragen zur Motivation fuer die Bewerbung) und einem Multiple-Choice Test. Die Literatur fuer den MC-Test kann von der homepage der FH des bfi Wien heruntergeladen werden. Der MC-Test findet am 28. Juni 2010 statt. Die strukturierten Interviews werden von Mitte Mai bis Ende Juni gefuehrt.
Lektorenpool aus dem wissenschaftlichen und berufsrelvanten Bereich:
Um einerseits theoretische Grundlagen zu vermitteln und andererseits die Anwendung der Theorie in der Praxis aufzuzeigen, konnten namhafte Lektoren aus diesen Bereichen fuer eine Vortragstaetigkeit in ARIMA gewonnen werden. Beispielshaft seien das IHS, die TU Wien, Oesterreichische Grossbanken und die OeNB genannt.

Ziel dieses Workshops ist ein repräsentativer Querschnitt durch das
wirtschaftliche, rechtliche und praktische Umfeldes eines Mathematikers
in der Finanz- und Versicherungsbranche.
Dazu finden einerseits Vorträge von Vertretern der AVÖ, der FMA, der
Nationalbank etc. statt, um das organisatorische, berufsethische und
aufsichtsrechtliche Umfeld vorzustellen. Andererseits sprechen Mathematiker
über ihren Tätigkeitsbereich in der Praxis der Versicherungs- und
Finanzbranche und stellen aktuelle praktische Problemstellungen und
mathematische Anwendungen vor.
Vor allem letztere Vorträge sollen auch in der Praxis tätigen Aktuaren und
Finanzmathematikern einen guten Überblick über andere Gebiete und einen Blick
über den eigenen Tellerrand hinaus liefern.
Die Teilnahme an dieser Veranstaltung ist kostenlos, eine Anmeldung ist
jedoch aus organisatorischen Gründen (v.a. wegen Bestuhlung) erforderlich.

Am Institut für Banken und Finanzierung der Universität Graz gelangt folgende Stelle zur Ausschreibung:
1 Dissertationsstelle (25-28 h / Woche)
Besetzung ab 1. März 2010 (spätestens ab 1. April 2010), befristet auf 12 Monate.
Die Arbeit umfasst Forschungsleistungen in den Bereichen Marktdesign und Marktmanagement von globalen CO2- und Finanzmärkten, deren empirischen Vergleich und daraus resultierende Handlungsempfehlungen für die Integration der CO2 Märkte.
Dieses Projekt ist Teil einer interdisziplinären Kooperation zwischen dem Institut für Banken und Finanzierung und dem Wegener Zentrum für Klima und Globalen Wandel der Universität Graz.
Erwünschte Qualifikationen:
- Abgeschlossenes Studium (Diplom- oder Masterstudium) der BWL (Schwerpunkt Finance) oder VWL (Schwerpunkt Internationale Ökonomik bzw. Umweltökonomie). Vorzugsweise fortgeschrittenes Stadium im jeweils anderen Studium.
- Analytische und quantitative Kompetenzen.
- Bereitschaft zur interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit.
- Projekterfahrung von Vorteil.
