In this presentation we will consider evidence at the individual level which demonstrates that mood directly impacts investors' risk preferences. We will also consider evidence at the aggregate market level to show that mood has an impact on the price of risk, the return on safe and risky assets, capital flows, and other important economic quantities. This research represents an important building block in the field of behavioral finance, linking human psychology with financial markets and even leading to broad predictability of market movements based on sharp changes in risk appetite. ABOUT LISA KRAMER: Lisa Kramer is an Associate Professor of Finance in the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management where she is the Canadian Securities Institute Research Foundation Limited Term Professor. She recently spent a one-year sabbatical as a Visiting Scholar in the Psychology Department at Stanford University. Her Ph.D. in finance is from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. Professor Kramer is an expert on behavioural finance, with interests in neuroeconomics, investments, capital market seasonality, human decisions, and emotions. Some of her best-known and most provocative research is based on identifying instances where investors' psychological tendencies lead to widespread movements in financial markets. She has delivered seminars at universities, conferences, private institutions, and government agencies around the world. Reported valuations deviate from standard valuations based on closing prices from CRSP for roughly seven percent of the positions. These deviations are economically significant for about 25 percent of the hedge fund advisors. Advisors with more pronounced valuation deviations show a stronger discontinuity in their reported returns around zero, manage a higher fraction of potentially fraudulent funds, show smoother reported returns, self-report to commercial databases, and are domiciled in offshore locations. Additional tests suggest that the documented equity valuation deviations respond to past performance. ABOUT ALEXANDER KEMPF: Professor Kempf is Professor of Finance at the University of Cologne and a full member of the Northrhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts. He is in charge of the Cologne PhD School in Risk Management, is a member of the Executive Board of the Cologne Graduate School and the managing Director of the CFR Centre for Financial Research. The CFR is an independent research institute focusing on topics in asset management. Professor Kempf has been teaching at the University of Cologne since 1999. He obtained his doctoral degree and his venia legendi from the University of Mannheim. Professor Kempf has published extensively on asset and risk management. After many decades of research having failed to provide a robust answer to this "annuity puzzle," psychologists and behavioral economists have begun to explore alternative explanations for consumers' aversion to annuities and other lifetime income products. This emerging literature suggests that individuals' observed reluctance to insure length-of-life risks is not fully rational. This talk will discuss some "non-rational" explanations for retiree behavior, including the role of complexity, poor financial literacy, sensitivity to framing, the role of default options, and "rules of thumb" that consumers follow when making decisions about lifetime income. The discussion will also focus on the implications of these findings for private markets and public policy responses. ABOUT JEFFREY R. BROWN: Jeffrey R. Brown is the William Karnes Professor of Finance in the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also serves as Director of the College of Business' Center on Business and Public Policy, and as Associate Director of the NBER Retirement Research Center. Prior to joining the Illinois faculty, Dr. Brown was an assistant professor of public policy at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. During 2001-2002, he served as Senior Economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers, where he focused primarily on Social Security, pension reform, and terrorism risk insurance. During 2001 he also served on the staff of the President's Commission to Strengthen Social Security. In 2006, President Bush nominated, and the Senate confirmed, Dr. Brown as a member of the Social Security Advisory Board. Professor Brown holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT. Professor Brown has published extensively on public and private insurance markets, including publications in top economic and finance journals and numerous books. He is the recipient of numerous research awards including the TIAA CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award for Outstanding Scholarly Writing on Lifelong Financial Security. We find that political uncertainty commands a risk premium whose magnitude is larger in poorer economic conditions. Political uncertainty reduces the value of the implicit put protection that the government provides to the market. It also makes stocks more volatile and more correlated when the economy is weak. In addition, we find that government policies cannot be judged by the stock market response to their announcement. Announcements of deeper reforms tend to elicit less favorable stock market reactions. ABOUT LUBOS PASTOR: Lubos Pastor is Charles P. McQuaid Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy and Research. In addition, he serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance and Journal of Financial Economics, as a Director of the Western Finance Association, and is a former Associate Editor of the Review of Financial Studies. Professor Pastor has been teaching at the University of Chicago since 1999 when he obtained a Ph.D. in finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Pastor's research focuses mostly on asset pricing and asset management. He has written on a broad range of topics such as liquidity risk, stock price bubbles, portfolio choice, performance evaluation, return predictability, long-run volatility, cost of capital, technological revolutions, government-induced uncertainty, and IPOs. He has analyzed parameter uncertainty and its resolution by learning. His articles have appeared in the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Review of Financial Studies, as well as nonacademic publications such as the Financial Times. [VFN] Masterstudiengang "Quantitative Asset and Risk Management" (ARIMA)

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, Die FH des bfi Wien hat im September 2009 einen neuen Studiengang im Bereich Asset- und Risikomanagement von Banken und Versicherungen gestartet. Heuer im Juni gibt es die ersten AbsolventInnen und die Chancen am Arbeitsmarkt sind hervorragend. Für das kommende Studienjahr 2011/12 werden noch Bewerbungen bis zum 15. Juni 2011 entgegen genommen. Die Entwicklung dieses Programmes erfolgte gemeinsam mit internationalen Partneruniversitaeten in Prag, Istanbul und Katowice und wurde von der EU als Joint Degree Curriculum Development Programm gefoerdert. Im 3. Semester findet daher ein verpflichtender Auslandsaufenthalt (zweimal 3 Wochen geblockt) bei einer der Partneruniversitaeten statt. Daraus ergibt sich auch, dass die Unterrichtssprache durchgaengig Englisch ist. Im Bereich Internationalisierung konnte außerdem mit der Universität Bologna, die einen Master in Quantitative Finance anbietet, ein Double Degree Abkommen abgeschlossen werden Das Ziel von ARIMA besteht darin, den Studierenden ein umfassendes Verstaendnis ueber die Zusammenhaenge zwischen Asset- und Risikomanagement im Finanzbereich zu vermitteln. Die AbsolventInnen erhalten eine fundierte Ausbildung im Risikomanagement (Quantifizierung von Risiken, Risikoaggregation; integrierte Steuerung von Banken und Versicherungen etc.) und Asset Management (Assetklassen, Portfolioselektion, Asset Liability Management, etc.). Hinzu treten methodisch-analytische Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten, vor allem in Finanzmathematik und Statistik. Voraussetzungen zur Teilnahme am Masterprogramm: Im Anschluss an ein wirtschafts-, sozial-, natur- oder rechtswissenschaftliches oder technisches Studium einer Universitaet oder Fachhochschule kann der vier Semester umfassende und berufsbegleitend organisierte Masterstudiengang ARIMA absolviert werden. Weiters muessen besuchte Lehrveranstaltungen im Bereich Mathematik/Statisitk und Wirtschaftswissenschaften nachgewiesen werden. Aufnahmeverfahren: Formales Kriterium fuer die Teilnahme am Aufnahmeverfahren ist eine schriftliche Bewerbung bis spaetestens 15. Juni 2011. Das Aufnahmeverfahren selbst besteht aus einem strukturierten Interview (kurze Praesentation zu einem aktuellen Thema auf Englisch und zusaetzliche Fragen zur Motivation fuer die Bewerbung) und einem Multiple-Choice Test. Die Literatur fuer den MC-Test kann von der homepage der FH des bfi Wien heruntergeladen werden. Der MC-Test findet am 22. Juni 2011 statt. Die strukturierten Interviews werden von Mitte Mai bis Ende Juni gefuehrt. Lektorenpool aus dem wissenschaftlichen und berufsrelvanten Bereich: Um einerseits theoretische Grundlagen zu vermitteln und andererseits die Anwendung der Theorie in der Praxis aufzuzeigen, konnten namhafte Lektoren aus diesen Bereichen fuer eine Vortragstaetigkeit in ARIMA gewonnen werden. Beispielshaft seien das IHS, die TU Wien, Oesterreichische Grossbanken und die OeNB genannt. In any practical setting, these parameters have to be estimated. This talk will show that the standard estimation procedures, like estimating unbiased values of the expected return, volatility, or discount rate, almost always lead to inappropriate financial decisions. The talk will analyze simple finance problems to illustrate proper estimation of unknown parameters. The insights gained from this real world application of finance turns finance intuition on its head. For example, multi-period investments with negative risk premia can be profitable, there can be infinite demand for risky securities by risk averse investors, settings exist where risk averse investors should not diversify, and demand for mutual funds with negative alphas may be rational. We also expect to observe smile effects in option-implied volatilities, even in settings that use the Black-Scholes assumptions about the return generating process of the underlying asset. ABOUT MARK GRINBLATT Mark Grinblatt is the J. Clayburn LaForce Professor of Finance at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, where he has been on the faculty since 1981. He received his Ph.D, M. Phil., and M.A. from Yale University, and his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. He served as a visiting professor at the Wharton School, as a visiting fellow at Yale University, and worked as a vice president for Salomon Brothers, Inc. He is a former president of the Western Finance Association and a founding member of the Foundation for the Advancement of Research in Financial Economics. He currently serves on the board of directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research and of Citi (formerly Salomon) Swapco, Inc., as an advisory or associate editor of four journals, and as Senior Associate Dean and Director of the UCLA Anderson Ph.D. Program. This information is contained in the "risk neutral probability distribution" (RND), which can be extracted from option price quotes in the market. The presentation will describe how this technology can be used to explore several interesting issues, including - how the RND changes from day to day and from minute to minute within a day as the underlying stock market moves; - how the public release of a major piece of information - the Federal Reserve's announcement of its target for the Federal funds rate becomes incorporated into market prices; - what factors are most important in determining the risk neutral volatility. ABOUT STEPHEN FIGLEWSKI: Stephen Figlewski is a Professor of Finance at the New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business, where he has been since 1976. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Princeton University and a Ph.D in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has published extensively in academic journals, especially in the area of financial futures and options. He is the founding Editor of The Journal of Derivatives and he also edits the Financial Economics Network's two "Derivatives" series published over the Internet. He is the director of the NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project, which is a research initiative at the Stern School that supports applied and theoretical research on derivatives and promotes intellectual interchange between academics and practitioners in derivatives, risk management, and financial engineering. Professor Figlewski has also worked on Wall Street. Recently he took a leave of absence to work on margin setting for credit-sensitive securities at Citigroup. It works closely with the finance and business communities to understand how emerging climate policies create and affect markets that allocate investment capital. The initiative maintains offices in key countries around the world. Barbara Buchner is director of the CPI office in Venice, Italy. E.ON Energy Trading: E.ON Energy Trading is one of Europe’s leading energy trading businesses and the commercial heart of E.ON, one of the largest investor-owned power and gas companies in the world. As the link between E.ON and the world’s wholesale energy markets, the company buys and sells electricity, natural gas, oil, coal, freight, biomass and emissions certificates. Stefan Ulreich is one of the leading energy policy experts in E-ON Energy Trading. Before joining E.ON Energy Trading he worked as a quantitative analyst in an investment bank. University of Graz: Within its current research portfolio the University of Graz combines excellent know-how regarding carbon markets (Wegener Center) with long term experience in the fields of finance and investment (Institute of Banking and Finance). These large negative returns on hedge funds, which often claim large diversification advantages due to their focus on absolute returns, has been viewed as anomalous by many observers. I argue that (a) hedge funds, on average, have significant market exposure even using standard risk estimation methods, (b) that standard methods of risk estimation underestimate market exposure, and (c) linear risk models further underestimate downside risk for certain funds. With proper methods for risk estimation, the returns on most hedge fund indices were as expected, given the crash in equity prices. This result has important implications for portfolio choice and asset management. ABOUT ROBERT A. KORAJCZYK: A member of the Kellogg School faculty since 1982, Robert A. Korajczyk is the Harry G. Guthmann Professor of Finance and Director of the Zell Center for Risk Research. He is a past Senior Associate Dean: Curriculum and Teaching and past Chair of the Finance Department. Professor Korajczyk received his BA, MBA, and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago. His research interests are in the areas of investments and empirical asset pricing. Die Austrian Working Group an Banking and Finance, kurz AWG, veranstaltet heuer den 25. Workshop. Dieser wird am 26. und 27. 11 2010 in Graz stattfinden. Das Generalthema für Freitag, den 26.11. lautet "Bankenstruktur und Unternehmensfinanzierung" Am Vormittag wird es einige Fachvorträge zu diesem Themenkreis geben. Am Nachmittag ist die Präsentation von max. 6 Papers zu diesem Thema vorgesehen. Auch im Namen von Prof. Peter Steiner darf ich Sie herzlich einladen, entweder selbst ein paper einzureichen oder diesen Call for papers an interessierte Institutsangehörige weiterzugeben. Die Papers werden von einem Komitee, bestehend aus Prof. Michael Hanke, Prof. Ewald Nowotny, Prof. Stefan Pichler und Prof. Peter Steiner begutachtet und ausgewählt. Papers senden Sie bitte mit dem Vermerk "AWG 2010" an office(a)bwg.at. Die Einreichfrist endet am 11. Oktober 2010. Papers, die Themen aus den Bereichen Banking und Finance allgemein betreffen, werden am Samstag vormittag abgehandelt. Date: APRIL 22nd, 2010 (Thursday) - 4.00 pm Location: Bank Gutmann AG, Schwarzenbergplatz 16, 1010 Wien Speaker: Dr. RODOLFO MARTELL , BlackRock Title: ALPHA AND BETA SEPARATION IN A SIMPLIFIED POLICY PORTFOLIO MODEL Abstract: A simple structural model of the economy and financial markets can explain the unexpected high frequency of rare, downside events. In a regime framework, a classic policy portfolio needs to be updated to account for additional uncertainty associated with regime shifts. Tactical portfolios are unlikely to succeed in the regime framework unless it is used in combination of unusually high levels of forecasting skill. This model presents a type of investor with knowledge of the uncertainty surrounding the regime framework whose portfolios will dominate traditional policy portfolios under almost all scenarios. About Rodolfo Martell: Rodolfo Martell, PhD, Director, is a member of BlackRock's Portfolio Management Group. He is a senior researcher in Scientific Active Equities with focus in Emerging Markets, particularly in Latin America. Dr. Martell's service with the firm dates back to 2007, including his years with Barclay's Global Investors (BGI), which merged with BlackRock in 2009. At BGI, he served as senior portfolio manager and worked on the development and implementation of Global Emerging Markets equity strategies within the International Scientific Equities Group. Prior to joining BGI, he was an assistant professor of finance at Purdue University. Dr. Martell's research has been published in the American Economic Review and the Review of Finance, and he has also served as ad-hoc referee to the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Business, the Review of Finance, and the Journal of Empirical Finance. He received the Pacesetter Award for Outstanding Achievement from the Fisher College of Business in 2004, and the John and Mary Willis Young Faculty Scholar Award at Purdue in 2006. [VFN] Neuer Masterstudiengang "Quantitative Asset and Risk Management" (ARIMA)

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, Die FH des bfi Wien hat im September 2009 einen neuen Studiengang im Bereich Asset- und Risikomanagement von Banken und Versicherungen gestartet. Es wurden 22 Studierende aufgenommen und die Ergebnisse und Erwartungen sind bisher sehr vielversprechend. Im September 2010 soll nun der 2. Jahrgang rekrutiert werden. Einerseits ist dieser Studiengang eine Reaktion auf den dringenden Bedarf der Wirtschaft nach AbsolventInnen in diesem Bereich, andererseits auch eine erste Antwort auf die gegenwaertige Finanzkrise unter dem Stichwort "Financial Education". Die Entwicklung dieses Programmes erfolgte gemeinsam mit internationalen Partneruniversitaeten in Prag, Istanbul und Katowice und wurde von der EU als Joint Degree Curriculum Development Programm gefoerdert. Im 3. Semester findet daher ein verpflichtender Auslandsaufenthalt (zweimal 3 Wochen geblockt) bei einer der Partneruniversitaeten statt. Daraus ergibt sich auch, dass die Unterrichtssprache durchgaengig Englisch ist. Das Ziel von ARIMA besteht darin, den Studierenden ein umfassendes Verstaendnis ueber die Zusammenhaenge zwischen Asset- und Risikomanagement im Finanzbereich zu vermitteln. Die AbsolventInnen erhalten eine fundierte Ausbildung im Risikomanagement (Quantifizierung von Risiken, Risikoaggregation; integrierte Steuerung von Banken und Versicherungen etc.) und Asset Management (Assetklassen, Portfolioselektion, Asset Liability Management, etc.). Hinzu treten methodisch-analytische Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten, vor allem in Finanzmathematik und Statistik. Voraussetzungen zur Teilnahme am Masterprogramm: Im Anschluss an ein wirtschafts-, sozial-, natur- oder rechtswissenschaftliches oder technisches Studium einer Universitaet oder Fachhochschule kann der vier Semester umfassende und berufsbegleitend organisierte Masterstudiengang ARIMA absolviert werden. Weiters muessen besuchte Lehrveranstaltungen im Bereich Mathematik/Statisitk und Wirtschaftswissenschaften nachgewiesen werden. Aufnahmeverfahren: Formales Kriterium fuer die Teilnahme am Aufnahmeverfahren ist eine schriftliche Bewerbung bis spaetestens 15. Juni 2010. Das Aufnahmeverfahren selbst besteht aus einem strukturierten Interview (kurze Praesentation zu einem aktuellen Thema auf Englisch und zusaetzliche Fragen zur Motivation fuer die Bewerbung) und einem Multiple-Choice Test. Die Literatur fuer den MC-Test kann von der homepage der FH des bfi Wien heruntergeladen werden. Der MC-Test findet am 28. Juni 2010 statt. Die strukturierten Interviews werden von Mitte Mai bis Ende Juni gefuehrt. Lektorenpool aus dem wissenschaftlichen und berufsrelvanten Bereich: Um einerseits theoretische Grundlagen zu vermitteln und andererseits die Anwendung der Theorie in der Praxis aufzuzeigen, konnten namhafte Lektoren aus diesen Bereichen fuer eine Vortragstaetigkeit in ARIMA gewonnen werden. Beispielshaft seien das IHS, die TU Wien, Oesterreichische Grossbanken und die OeNB genannt. The application is based on a mixture of scientific methods: laboratory experiments, careful economic modelling and mathematical reasoning. Moreover, the application draws from profound experience that we could gather in the Swiss Banking Industry. About Thorsten Hens: Thorsten Hens is an economist from Germany. He is Swiss Finance Institute Professor of Financial Economics and director of the Swiss Banking Institute at the University of Zürich, Switzerland as well as a Fellow of CEPR and an Adjunct Professor of Finance at the Norwegian of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen. He studied at the University of Bonn and at DELTA in Paris and previously held professorships at Stanford University and at the University of Bielefeld. His research areas are -- among others -- Behavioral Finance and Evolutionary Finance. According to the Handelsblatt ranking Thorsten Hens was ranked among the top 10 economics professors in the German spoken area (Germany, Switzerland and Austria). In researching how investors make their decisions, Professor Hens draws on work in Psychology and applies insights from Biology in order to understand the dynamics of financial markets. As part of the thematic program at the Wolfgang Pauli Institute (WPI) Vienna "The interplay between Financial and Insurance Mathematics, Statistics and Econometrics" there will be two talks on Wednesday January 13, 2010 at the seminar room C714 at the Pauli Institute <http://www.wpi.ac.at/address.php> 11:00-12:00 Jean Jacod (Université Paris VI): tba 15:00-16:00 Viktor Todorov (Kellogg School of Management): Tails, Fears and Risk Premia Abstract: We show that the compensation for rare events accounts for a large fraction of the average equity and variance risk premia. As such, our results suggest that any satisfactory equilibrium-based asset pricing model must be able to generate both large and time-varying compensations for fears of disasters. Our empirical investigations are essentially model-free, involving new extreme value theory approximations based on ``medium'' size jumps in high-frequency intraday prices for estimating the expected values of the tails under the statistical probability measure, and short maturity out-of-the money options and new model-free implied variation measures for estimating the corresponding risk neutral expectations. Neuer Masterstudiengang ARIMA (Quantitative Asset and Risk Management) Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, Die FH des bfi Wien startet im September 2009 einen neuen Studiengang im Bereich Asset- und Risikomanagement von Banken und Versicherungen. Einerseits ist dies eine Reaktion auf den dringenden Bedarf der Wirtschaft nach AbsolventInnen in diesen Bereich, andererseits auch eine erste Antwort auf die gegenwärtige Finanzkrise unter dem Stichwort "Financial Education". Die Entwicklung dieses Programmes erfolgte gemeinsam mit internationalen Partneruniversitäten in Prag und Istanbul und wurde von der EU als Joint Degree Curriculum Development Programm gefördert. Im 3. Semester findet daher ein verpflichtender Auslandsaufenthalt (zweimal 3 Wochen geblockt) bei einer der Partneruniversitäten statt. Daraus ergibt sich auch, dass die Unterrichtssprache durchgängig Englisch ist. Das Ziel von ARIMA besteht darin, den Studierenden ein umfassendes Verständnis über die Zusammenhänge zwischen Asset- und Risikomanagement im Finanzbereich zu vermitteln. Die AbsolventInnen erhalten eine fundierte Ausbildung im Risikomanagement (Quantifizierung von Risiken, Risikoaggregation; integrierte Steuerung von Banken und Versicherungen etc.) und Asset Management (Assetklassen, Portfolioselektion, Asset Liability Management, etc.). Hinzu treten methodisch-analytische Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten, vor allem in Finanzmathematik und Statistik. Voraussetzungen zur Teilnahme am Masterprogramm: Im Anschluss an ein wirtschafts-, sozial-, natur- oder rechtswissenschaftliches oder technisches Studium einer Universität oder Fachhochschule kann der vier Semester umfassende und berufsbegleitend organisierte Masterstudiengang ARIMA absolviert werden. Weiters müssen besuchte Lehrveranstaltungen im Bereich Mathematik/Statisitk und Wirtschaftswissenschaften nachgewiesen werden (Details siehe Study Guide Seite 6). Aufnahmeverfahren: Formales Kriterium für die Teilnahme am Aufnahmeverfahren ist eine schriftliche Bewerbung bis spätestens 15. Juni 2009. Das Aufnahmeverfahren selbst besteht aus einem strukturierten Interview (kurze Präsentation zu einem aktuellen Thema auf Englisch und zusätzliche Fragen zur Motivation für die Bewerbung) und einem Multiple-Choice Test. Die Literatur für den MC-Test sind einerseits ausgewählte Kapitel aus dem Buch "Principles of Corporate Finance" von Brealey/Myers (8. oder 9. Auflage), McGraw - Hill, anderseits ein Statistikskriptum, welches auf der homepage der FH des bfi Wien zur Verfügung gestellt wird. Der MC-Test findet am 29. Juni 2009 statt. Die strukturierten Interviews werden von Mitte Mai bis Ende Juni geführt. Lektorenpool aus dem wissenschaftlichen und berufsrelvanten Bereich Um einerseits theoretische Grundlagen zu vermitteln und andererseits die Anwendung der Theorie in der Praxis aufzuzeigen, konnten namhafte Lektoren aus diesen Bereichen für eine Vortragstätigkeit in ARIMA gewonnen werden. Beispielshaft seien das IHS, die TU Wien, österreichische Großbanken und die OeNB genannt.
