Your team

The Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) is the system of banking supervision in Europe. It comprises the ECB and the national supervisory authorities of the participating countries.

You will be joining one of the following three Directorates General (DGs) within the SSM:

  • Systemic and International Banks;
  • Universal and Diversified Institutions;
  • Specialised Institutions and LSIs.

Within ECB Banking Supervision, these DGs are responsible for the ongoing supervision of significant institutions (SIs) and for overseeing the supervision of less significant institutions (LSIs).

As a trainee, you will be part of a dynamic international team of experts in one of the areas below:

  • Directly supervising SIs as part of a Joint Supervisory Team (JST), comprising staff from the ECB and the relevant national competent authority (NCA). The JSTs carry out the annual Supervisory Review and Evaluation Process (SREP) as well as other supervisory tasks;
  • Indirectly supervising LSIs and handling crisis cases as part of a country desk;
  • Horizontal banking supervision projects with the involvement of the aforementioned DGs.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a trainee, you will:

  • analyse financial accounts and monitor market perceptions of supervised banks;
  • collect and analyse data and generic tables, charts and reports;
  • analyse the legal and regulatory frameworks of financial institutions in various jurisdictions;
  • work independently, guided by a mentor, on projects relating to the implementation of supervisory practices and standards.

These traineeships are a unique opportunity for anyone wanting to start a career in banking supervision, finance, accounting and related areas. You will be working in a challenging and inspiring environment alongside international experts in the field of banking supervision. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens. Your assigned mentor will help you develop your technical skills and navigate the multicultural setting. Training courses, workshops and conferences will enable you to acquire an advanced knowledge of economics, finance and banking.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a bachelor's degree or higher in finance, economics, statistics, mathematics, physics, business informatics, business administration, financial/banking law, accounting or a similar subject;
  • a keen interest in banking-related risk analysis, financial regulation and supervisory standards and practices;
  • a good knowledge of MS Office, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • a master's degree in the subjects mentioned above;
  • knowledge of data management and analysis tools, including basic coding skills;
  • knowledge of banking regulation, banking, corporate finance, risk management, statistical modelling or accounting.

You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people's diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB's mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are keen to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the objectives of this position.
